Sodium Chloride brines and Potassium Chloride brines are used extensively as a base for the fluid phase of the drilling process. Amongst their various functions, these fluids help to lubricate drilling bits and maintain the stability of the hole being drilled into the sub-sea surface before it can be sheathed or cased with steel pipe.
Brines are non-toxic and consist of super-saturated solutions of naturally mined sodium or potassium salts.
At Brineflow, we hold large strategic stocks of sodium and potassium brines and can respond immediately on a 24-hour callout basis to programmed drilling or in the case of sudden surges in demand, for example in a blow-out situation, where time is of the essence.
Whilst our most popular grades are either sodium or potassium brines, we do produce short-run custom mixes containing combinations of sodium and potassium for hydraulic fracturing drilling or bespoke foundation stabilisation projects.
Our Brine Production Facility in Great Yarmouth is available on a 24/7 basis to
- pump concentrated brines and drilling chemicals to offshore vessels a dedicated berth at any state of the tide.
- Despatch brines by road tanker for distribution to onshore shale operations throughout the UK on demand.

Onshore Drilling for Shale Production
Onshore drilling requires smaller quantities of specialist brines at short notice with timed-deliveries to site from Road Transport. We supply pre-manufactured sodium, potassium or custom-blended [depending on geological conditions] brines by road tankers to shale sites throughout the UK.
Construction & Foundation Applications
Brines are also used in the onshore construction industry in certain construction situations when maintenance and stabilisation of building foundation in clay soils is required. We can supply custom sodium or potassium brines in limited quantities packed in 1000 litre containers for overnight delivery direct to site for this application.
Sodium brines are used for pavement and car-park de-icing situations for application by ATV mounted sprayer. We can supply sodium brines in 1000 litre containers for overnight delivery for this application.
